Dry bulk shipping market: weakly and hardly recovering

According to the January 2011 World Economic Outlook Update of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the world economy increased by 5% in 2010 (in difference +0.2% from the figure 4.8% in the October 2010 WEO projection), and is projected to expand by 4.4% in 2011 (in difference +0.2% from the figure 4.2% in the October 2010 WEO projection). This shows that the world economy is recovering a bit stronger than expected. However, uncertainty is still there. Copenhagen-Malmo port: One port – Two countries

Copenhagen - Malmo port – a logistics hub in Scandinavia

CMP is a gateway to Scandinavia, the Baltic Region and Northern Europe. CMP is situated at the main intersection of all north-south distribution channels from Central Europe to Scandinavia and Northern Europe. The Copenhagen-Malmo Region is home to more than four million affluent, well-educated consumers. Scandinavia as a whole counts 24 million consumers, and taking the ten countries that border the Baltic Sea, it is possible to reach as many as 100 million consumers overnight from CMP.

CMP is developing into a central hub for transport and logistics in Scandinavia. This is partly due to its strategic location, with the new port in the close proximity of a well-developed motorway net, Copenhagen Airport and the bridge between Denmark and Sweden. From here, the whole of the Nordic and Baltic regions can be covered by a simple combination of ships, trains and trucks, a fact that facilitates mass distribution, economies of scale and low costs. Distribution to all of Scandinavia and Northern Europe from one location is a key factor for the logistics strategies of many global companies. …(Read more on Vietnam Shipper Issue No. 77)

Attention to DETAILS

When hammering out contracts, shippers, carriers should focus on specifics.

If 2009 was the year of the shipper and 2010 the year of the carrier, 2011 may well be the year of the detail. As in, the year that shippers and carriers start paying heed to the details in service contracts that have long been ignored.

Details like shippers meeting their minimum quantity commitments, and carriers avoiding the urge to drop unexpected rate increases and surcharges in their customers’ laps.

Hope for better, prepare for worse

Forecasting what will happen in 2011 is like asking the majority of English Premier League managers how safe they feel in their jobs halfway through the football season. With that in mind and knowing how wafer thin the operating margins are for the airline industry, trying to forecast this year must include, at the very least, a serious health warning.

The good news, although this is not surprising, is that 2011 will follow 2010, and while we might not appreciate it, apparently 2010 will be a vintage year. According to the latest IATA industry forecast, the organization expects 2010 to result in an industry profit of some $8.9 billion.

On the back of 2010 can we expect 2011 to be better, the same or worse?.…(Read more on Vietnam Shipper Issue No. 77)
