Maritime Safety Management: Conventions and Codes
Part II – ISM Code and ISPS Code

ISM Code

ISM Code is the International Management Code for the Safe Operation of Ships and for Pollution Prevention. It is designed to concentrate on the human element in safety at sea. The Code was born after a number of very serious accidents happened during the late 1980’s in which management faults were contributing factors, especially after the loss of the Herald of Free Enterprise.

The IMO adopted the ISM Code in 1993 and in 1998 it became mandatory. The objectives of the Code are to ensure safety at sea, to prevent human injury or loss of life, and to avoid damage to the environment, in particular to the marine environment and to property. The Code establishes safety management objectives and requires “the Company” to set up a safety management system (SMS). The Company is also required to establish and implement a policy for achieving these objectives. This includes providing the necessary resources and shore-based support. Each company is expected "to designate a person or persons ashore having direct access to the highest level of management".(Read more on Vietnam Shipper Issue No. 72)

Supply Chain Management
Just-in-time model and Lean Supply Chain

The three core elements of lean supply chain include: JIT purchasing, JIT transportation and JIT kanban systems.

The objectives of lean management aim to: Flow – inventory moves through the supply chain continuously with minimal queuing or non-value-adding activity being performed; Pull – the customer order starts the work process, which ripples down the supply chain; Striving for excellence – perfect quality.(Read more on Vietnam Shipper Issue No. 72)
